Overview of Treatment

While chemical dependency strikes the addict first and foremost; it touches the lives of everyone close to the addicted person: dozens of loved ones are affected by the disease. We at Astoria Pointe believe in treating the whole problem; we emphasize a program that involves family members and loved ones, requesting their participation in the recovery process.

Astoria Pointe's recovery program for alcohol and drug addiction is based on the most established and highly regarded methods of medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy, combined with the proven Twelve Step Program of AA and NA.

Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient's history, background and current needs. Our addiction-assessment team is committed to provide the best individual care for each new resident, from detoxification to soberness to maintaining a quality level of sobriety. Our staff consists of highly trained professionals; our doctors are fully accredited and licensed by the State of Oregon. As a well-integrated unit, staff and doctors at Astoria Pointe work collectively with the best interest of the patient always first.

A recovery program is generally thirty, sixty or ninety days. We also have arrangements for long-term care, if requested, with an effective, supervised aftercare program. Recently we have initiated an extended sober-living program for those individuals who need help in their efforts to lead clean and sober lives back in society.

Treatment at Astoria Pointe includes individual counseling, group therapy, a family program and various recreational outlets such as walking on the beach, hiking, swimming and bowling. Upon admittance, each patient is provided a weekly schedule along with literature and supplies for the activities ahead. A basic schedule for a client in their first thirty days of treatment is as follows:

Specific Methods

All programs at Astoria Pointe are grounded in the Twelve Step Program. We guide our patients through a process of self-discovery and recovery. The Astoria Pointe treatment methods incorporate a multi-faceted medical approach for chemical and alcohol addiction. Detoxification, a dual-diagnosis, family program, and sex, love and relationship addiction are all addressed as part of our program.

At Astoria Pointe we promote gender-based programs, with emphasis on relapse prevention, promoting healthy life skills, while incorporating the Twelve Step Program. All this and more will be explored through our residential treatment program. We also incorporate individual and group therapy, with journal writing and sharing to promote healthy feedback. In the course of restoring their lives, our residents are also introduced to adjunct therapies such as yoga, meditation, art and poetry therapy and animal-care therapy.

In the first thirty days at Astoria Pointe, the residents are required to go to all their groups and will only leave the facility as a group, if an outside activity is on the schedule. We address any physical issues immediately and monitor their vital signs continually during detoxification.

During the thirty day to sixty day phase, the residents are allowed a limited amount of open time. They are given the opportunity to engage in outside volunteer work and activities. This is the beginning of learning to apply and practice new life skills that have begun to emerge.

After sixty days, residents are given more freedom to explore their new found abilities and social skills. Those that are planning to transition into sober-living begin to look for employment. They also may enroll in the nearby community college or apply at the Job Corps Center. For many, this is a perfect opportunity to seek education or retraining as part of their progress back into society.

After an individual graduates from Astoria Pointe's residential program, we strongly urge an aftercare plan while offering the option for transitional living. This is available on the grounds of Astoria Pointe or in sober-living facilities in the immediate area, extending to the Portland vicinity. Our experience has shown us that a large majority of addicts and alcoholics need six months to a year of a structured sober environment to be successful in recovery and to ensure against relapse.

If you have a friend or loved one that doesn't think they need help, don't give up on them. Plenty of individuals enter Astoria Pointe with no intention of staying clean & sober, but with our guidance and family intervention they agree to go through the program. After a period of time in treatment, their outlook changes and they are well started on the road to recovery.

Medical Information / Qualifications

Astoria Pointe's medical professionals are W. Byrd, MD, along with nurse practitioner, June Longway, PHMNP. We offer a special program dealing with opiate withdrawal. If deemed necessary, and under the care of Dr. Byrd, we would use specific medical protocol which incorporates Suboxone (active ingredient buprenorphin). We evaluate the use of Suboxone on a case by case basis.
